Passing a Urinary Tract Stone Without Surgery: A True Story

In my previous article, I shared my experience dealing with high blood sugar and how I managed it without relying entirely on chemical medications, but instead by using traditional herbal remedies.

My Journey Living with Type 2 Diabetes

Honestly, I focus on herbal topics in this blog because I personally use traditional medicine as a complement to modern medical treatment. In several cases, it has helped me improve my health gradually.

In this article, I want to share another important experience—when I suffered from a urinary tract stone, which caused me to be hospitalized for three days.

The Beginning: Pain I Thought Was Just “Wind Illness”

It all started with a mild pain on the right side of my abdomen. At first, I thought it was just something minor—like indigestion or what we commonly call “wind illness” in my hometown.

However, something felt different:

  • The pain came and went
  • It gradually became more intense
  • Sometimes it felt sharp and disturbing

Since I underestimated it, I delayed going to the doctor.

Initial Check-Up: Suspected Appendicitis

Eventually, I decided to visit a doctor. After a physical examination, including pressing my abdomen and moving my legs toward my stomach, the doctor suspected appendicitis.

I was given medication to take for a few days. However:

  • There was no significant improvement
  • The pain persisted

At this point, I began to worry.

Condition Worsens: Emergency Room Visit

One night around midnight, the pain suddenly became unbearable. I couldn’t sleep at all.

I asked my wife to take me to the nearest hospital immediately.

At the emergency room:

  • I received an injection (likely a pain reliever)
  • Blood samples were taken
  • Initial observations were conducted

The doctor mentioned two possible conditions:

  1. Liver disease
  2. Appendicitis

To confirm, I was scheduled for further examination the next day.

The Real Diagnosis: Urinary Tract Stone

The next day, I underwent an X-ray examination.

The result was quite surprising. The doctor confirmed that I had a urinary tract stone on the right side, with a relatively large size.

At that moment, I realized the pain I had been experiencing was far from a minor issue.Medical Treatment and the Threat of Surgery

As an initial treatment, the doctor prescribed:

  • Medical medication
  • A herbal-based supportive remedy

I was allowed to go home but asked to return for a follow-up after a few days.

However, after two days, my condition had not improved significantly. The pain was still there.

During the follow-up, the doctor said that:
👉 If there was no improvement within a week, I would be referred to a larger hospital in Medan for surgery.

Hearing the word “surgery” made me anxious.

Looking for Alternatives: Herbal Remedies

Not wanting to go straight into surgery, I started researching natural treatments for urinary tract stones.

From various sources, I found two herbal plants that are often mentioned:

  • Keji beling (Strobilanthes crispus)
  • Cat’s whiskers (Orthosiphon aristatus)

These plants are well known in traditional medicine.

Benefits of the Herbal Remedies

🌿 Keji Beling (Strobilanthes crispus)

From what I learned, keji beling may:

  • Help dissolve urinary stones
  • Act as a natural diuretic
  • Support kidney cleansing
  • Reduce inflammation

🌿 Cat’s Whiskers (Orthosiphon aristatus)

This plant is also widely used and may:

  • Improve urine flow
  • Help flush out small crystals
  • Reduce pain
  • Support urinary tract health

How I Used Them

I began consuming these herbs regularly.

My routine was simple:

  • Boil the leaves
  • Drink the boiled water daily
  • Increase my water intake

I continued taking the doctor’s medication and did not replace it entirely. I used herbal remedies as a complement.

What Happened Next

After a few weeks, I started to notice changes.

One day while urinating:

  • I felt a slight blockage
  • Then small crystal-like particles came out

A couple of days later, another stone passed.

After that:

  • The pain gradually disappeared
  • My body felt lighter
  • I could return to normal activities

This was a turning point for me.

Symptoms to Watch Out For

Based on my experience, some symptoms of urinary tract stones include:

  • Pain in the abdomen or lower back
  • Intermittent pain
  • Difficulty urinating
  • A burning sensation
  • Feeling of incomplete urination

If you experience these, it’s best to seek medical attention.

Possible Causes

Some common causes include:

  • Not drinking enough water
  • High salt intake
  • Poor lifestyle habits
  • Frequently holding in urine

Prevention Tips

To prevent urinary tract stones:

  • Drink enough water daily
  • Do not hold your urine
  • Reduce salt intake
  • Eat more fruits and vegetables
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle

Important Note

This is my personal experience, and results may vary from person to person.

I strongly recommend:

  • Consulting a doctor
  • Not fully replacing medical treatment
  • Using herbal remedies wisely as a complement

Conclusion

Regardless of which treatment played the biggest role, I personally feel that traditional herbal remedies helped support my recovery.

This experience strengthened my belief that combining medical treatment with herbal support can be beneficial when done properly.

I hope my story can be helpful for those facing similar conditions.
